So far this winter we’ve experienced a lot of heavy rain and strong winds, as well as sharp drops in temperature, and many of us have been keeping our heating on for longer.
More than 18,000 homes in West Devon could benefit from improvements to reduce energy costs and enhance comfort year-round. The question many people ask is, ‘where to start?’ There are a number of practical measures that we can all take to make sure we stay warm and well.
One simple way to beat the chill is to ‘dress smart, not pretty’ by choosing layers that trap heat and keep you comfortable indoors and out. Dressing for the season was the norm before the widespread adoption of central heating systems within homes. This is a habit which many seem to have forgotten or consider unnecessary. It’s common practice in cold outdoor environments to ‘layer up’, and this is equally as important indoors as outdoors, particularly when it is very cold outside.
You may be surprised at how much more comfortable you feel with some additional layers including thermal underwear and keeping your feet, hands and head warm with thicker socks, gloves (fingerless gloves will keep your hands warm whilst still enabling you to use them) and a hat!
Stopping your heat escaping is key to staying warm. Draught busting (e.g. door and window strips, and draught excluders) can make a big difference. Using a slow cooker and a microwave can also reduce the cost of cooking. Keeping radiators clear and switching appliances off at the plug also helps reduce unnecessary energy use.
Once you’ve explored these everyday energy wins, it’s worth thinking about longer term improvements. Appropriate insulation upgrades are a great place to start, helping to keep the heat in and reduce overall energy use. Renewables and smart technologies such as solar panels, heat pumps and smart meters can also lower bills and reduce reliance on the grid.
Upgrading to more efficient heating controls can boost comfort and cut heat loss, while replacing older boilers or appliances with modern, efficient models can make a noticeable difference to running costs.
Tackling damp is also important as damp air takes longer to heat and increases costs, and mould can be harmful to your health. The key to damp management is the following which can be remembered as HIVE: Heating, Insulation, Ventilation and Excessive Moisture Production.
Damp warm air will move to the coldest parts of a home, and if the surfaces are cold, this will cause condensation which can cause mould. Keeping at least a low level of heat in the home can make a big difference (say 14-15 degrees). Insulating wherever feasible will help and taking steps to reduce the amount of moisture in the home including keeping lids on pans when cooking, bathroom and kitchen doors closed and not drying washing indoors. Good ventilation is also very important, bringing fresh air into the home and taking away moist air particularly from ‘wet rooms’ including bathrooms, kitchens and utilities.
