Make a text edit
Step 1a
When viewing the website as a logged in user, an additional tool bar is seen on the website as illustrated below.
While viewing the page where an edit is required click Edit Page, as indicated by the arrow.
This is the most common way of editing a page.
Step 1b
Alternatively from the dashboard, you can select Pages and type the page you are looking for into the search box. It doesn’t have to be exact.
Now select the required page from the results.
Step 2
Either of these actions will take you behind the scenes of the web page.
Look for the section that is called LAYOUTS, as illustrated below.
It doesn’t look much like the web page we’re wishing to edit.
This is because every page, post, event etc on this website is constructed using elements called blocks.
Just like Lego bricks, there are several different blocks and they combine to create a page design.
In this example, we can see 5 blocks that make this page.
Most are compressed, but No3, Text Block is expanded, but however they are doesn’t affect how the page looks.
You don’t need to know much about them to edit a page, other than:
- They contain all the text, photos and behaviours that make up the page.
- The order here corresponds to there order on the web page.
- They can be compressed, expanded showing layout or expanded showing content.
Step 3
To find the text we wish to edit can take a little practice, but edits near the top of the page are probably in blocks near the top of the list and vice versa.
After a while you might start to recognise some of the blocks.
This can help you locate the one containing the content you wish to edit more quickly.
To see the content we will need to expand the block into CONTENT mode.
The illustration below shows how to Expand and Contract the blocks and toggle between Layout and Content.
Step 4
Once you have found the block and the correct copy, make the amendment.
If the text looks all computer code, toggle the tab to Visual.
Step 5
Now the most important part – make sure you save your changes by pressing UPDATE.
Have a go yourself
To check your understanding, use the steps above to amend the following sentence.
My favourite special species is a Hedgehog.
Delete the current picture and use Add Media to see if you can find a picture of the species to load on to the page.
